Map user guide

The APC Map Browser is designed as a rapid visualisation tool to enable you to visualise Antarctic Place-names on  a topographical map of the continent, and to get detailed information about the origin of each name.  There is the option to overlay a selection of Antarctic Digital Database datasets, as well as the LIMA satellite image backdrop. What follows is a brief tour of the viewer controls. They will be fairly intuitive to anyone who has used interactive web mapping before e.g. Google or Bing Maps.

Please note:  In normal map usage, there will often be clusters of large numbers of place-names in quite small areas.  You may need to zoom the map in one or more levels before you see what you expect.  Also, labelling of places is done automatically, and will always be inferior to manual cartographic placement.  Conflicts between labels may be resolved arbitrarily.
