Call for Place Name Proposals in British Antarctic Territory and South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands Place-name of the Month

If you’ve ever noticed unnamed places during your research or fieldwork—perhaps referring to them as “Glacier A, B, or C”– now is your chance to propose official names. The UK Antarctic Place-names Committee (APC) have announced a call to propose names for their upcoming meeting and the deadline for submissions is coming up.

The APC consider place names for features in British Antarctic Territory (BAT) and South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). They also review names for the unclaimed sector, 80-150°W. Place names are vital to ensure that geographical features are distinctly identified for safe navigation, communication and science.

Detailed guidelines and additional information about the naming process are available on the APC website. To submit a proposal, please complete the proposal form or contact the Secretary at eleeld@bas.ac.uk. Be quick! The deadline is 17 March.
